Hard Inquiries, Explained Without the Myths

Inquiries are one of the most misunderstood items on a credit report. Here's what they do, what they don't, and when to push back.

01

What a hard inquiry actually costs

A single hard inquiry typically costs a few points and fades within months. It stays on your report for two years, but its scoring impact rarely lasts that long.

The real danger is clusters. Several inquiries in a short window read as desperation to scoring models and to human underwriters.

02

Rate shopping is protected

Mortgage, auto, and student loan inquiries made within a short shopping window are usually grouped and counted as one. Shop aggressively for rates — the models expect it.

Credit card applications are not grouped. Each one counts separately.

03

When an inquiry can be removed

Legitimate inquiries you authorized almost never come off. But inquiries you didn't authorize — from identity errors or fraud — can and should be disputed.

Check your reports regularly. An unfamiliar inquiry is often the first visible sign of a bigger problem.
