When an Auto Refinance May Make Sense

A stronger profile or improved loan-to-value position may create options, but the numbers need to justify the change.

01

Reasons borrowers refinance

A refinance may be worth exploring when credit has improved, market rates have changed, or the original dealership loan carried expensive terms.

The goal should be a lower total borrowing cost or a payment structure that meaningfully improves the budget—not simply restarting the clock.

02

Check the loan-to-value position

Lenders compare the current balance with the vehicle's value. Owing substantially more than the vehicle is worth can limit options even with improved credit.

Paying the balance down or waiting for the loan-to-value ratio to improve may create a stronger application later.

03

Run the full calculation

Compare remaining interest on the current loan with total interest and fees on the new one. Extending the term can lower the payment while costing more overall.
